Is Claude Code free? Student access, prices in India and when Max is worth it

Whether you can use Claude Code without paying, what the paid plans cost, what students can get, and how to decide if you need the higher tier.

Short answer

No. Claude Code is not included in Claude's free plan. You need a paid plan, from $20 a month for Pro or $17 a month billed yearly, or pay-as-you-go usage through an Anthropic Console account. Anthropic offers no student discount on individual plans; some universities buy Claude access through its Education plan.

Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent: it reads your codebase, edits files and runs commands from your terminal, your IDE, the Claude desktop app or the browser.

The short answer is no, but there are cheaper ways in than you might expect. Every price below comes from Anthropic's own pages, checked on 30 September 2026.

What's free and what isn't

Claude has a free plan, and you can use it to chat with Claude. It does not include Claude Code: Anthropic's pricing page lists Claude Code as included in all paid plans.

There is one other route. The Claude Code documentation says you can sign in with a Claude subscription or an Anthropic Console account. The Console is Anthropic's pay-as-you-go developer platform, so you pay for what you use instead of a monthly plan. That can be cheaper if you only use Claude Code now and then, and more expensive if you use it all day.

Plans and prices

PlanPriceClaude Code
Free$0Not included
Pro$20/month, or $17/month billed yearly ($200 up front)Included
Max 5x$100/month, for 5× Pro's usageIncluded
Max 20x$200/month, for 20× Pro's usageIncluded

Two things about usage matter more than the price:

  • Limits reset on a rolling five-hour window, and paid plans add weekly limits on top.
  • Claude Code shares the same pool as your chats in the Claude apps. A long day of chatting leaves less room for coding.

What does it cost in India?

Anthropic's pricing page lists prices in US dollars. Its help centre says the Pro plan is "$20 per month (US), with pricing in your local currency where supported", so the price you see at checkout may be in rupees. India is on Anthropic's list of supported regions. Check the amount on the checkout page before you subscribe, because Anthropic doesn't publish a rupee price on its pricing page.

Can students get it free or discounted?

Not as individuals. Anthropic's help centre says it doesn't offer standard discounted pricing on any of its paid plans.

What does exist:

  • Through your university. Anthropic sells an Education plan: a university-wide plan covering students, faculty and staff at discounted rates. If your university has one, you get Claude access through it. Anthropic's pages don't say whether that includes Claude Code, so ask your IT or computer science department.
  • The Claude Campus program. It is free to apply and open to students anywhere who are 18 or older with work authorisation in their country of study; selected campus ambassadors receive a USD 3,600 stipend under the program's terms. Applications for autumn 2026 ran from 1 to 12 September and are now closed. It is a program you apply to, not a discount.

If neither applies to you, the cheaper tools in the last section are the realistic way to start.

When the higher tier is worth it

Max 5x costs $100 a month, five times the price of Pro. It is worth it in one situation: you use Claude Code for real work most days and you keep hitting Pro's limits before the five-hour window resets.

Signs you are there:

  • You regularly stop work because you have hit a limit, and waiting costs you more than the difference in price.
  • You run long, multi-step tasks, such as refactors or test writing across many files, that use up a Pro window quickly.
  • You use Claude for chat and coding every day, and the shared pool runs out.

If you hit limits only occasionally, stay on Pro. Plan your heavy tasks at the start of a window, or use the Console's pay-as-you-go option for the odd busy day.

Cheaper ways to start

If you mainly want to learn how to work with an AI coding tool, you don't have to start with Claude Code at all:

  • Cursor has a free Hobby plan with a limited number of agent requests and no credit card required.
  • GitHub Copilot has a free tier with 2,000 code completions a month and limited chat and agent use.

Once you know how you like to work, it's easier to judge whether Claude Code's paid plans are worth it for you. For a side-by-side view of the main options, see our comparison of the AI coding tools.
